Structure and diversity of fishes in a freshwater and coastal subtropical lagoon

Abstract: This study examined the fish communities of Peri Lagoon in southern Brazil to aid in the development of an effective management plan because the area is under threat from human activities. Sampling of fish fauna, ichthyoplankton and limnological data were compared between sites, differing by habitat type and characteristics such as depth, substratum composition and vegetation type. Results were significantly related to site, with the highest diversity and abundance recorded at shallow vegetated sites. A total … Show more

“…grossidens and P. platana dominate the ichthyofauna in Peri Lagoon (Ferreira et al, 2017). The average body length of the former species that we recorded was 167.6 mm for females and 145.4 mm for males, higher than that recorded by Goulart et al (2007) for L. grossidens (110 mm) in the Middle Uruguay River region (Rio Grande do Sul/Brazil).…”

“…However, the presence of larvae in Peri Lagoon confirmed that both species experienced favorable spawning conditions and did successfully spawn. Furthermore, a parallel study in Peri Lagoon reported the larvae of both species were among the five most captured species (Ferreira et al, 2017).…”

“…Limited environmental studies have been conducted on this lagoon since the 1970s, resulting in significant gaps in our understanding of its functions (Teive et al, 2008). Regarding the ichthyofauna, only a few studies have focused on adult animals, and even fewer have investigated the distribution of fish eggs and larvae in this lagoon (Ferreira et al, 2017;Lopes et al, 2018).…”

“…Coastal lagoons are highly productive coastal systems in the transitional area between ocean and land that provide a range of ecosystem services and habitats for many species that society values [1][2][3][4]. The tidal inlet provides the major connection from the lagoon to the open sea, and the barrier means that the lagoon becomes a semi-enclosed water [5,6].…”
