Structure and dissolution behavior of MgO–P2O5–TiO2/Nb2O5 (Mg/P ≥ 1) invert glasses

Abstract: Magnesium phosphate glasses exhibit unusual properties and were classified as 'anomalous phosphate glasses', because magnesium is attributed to a variation of the oxygen coordination number from 6 to 4. Magnesium in phosphate glasses acts as an intermediate oxide and its role was determined, relating to the phosphate chain length. In the present work, MgOP 2 O 5 TiO 2 / Nb 2 O 5 glasses with Mg/P ratio between 1.00 and 1.36 were successfully prepared by a meltquenching method. Magnesium in the glasses worked a… Show more

“…The chemical durability of PIGs was improved by increasing the Ca/P ratio. 2,11) 65CaO30P 2 O 5 5Nb 2 O 5 glass exhibits high durability; however, the released amount of Ca 2+ ions from the glass was 0.4 mM for 7 days, which was over 4 times larger than the amount of Zn 2+ ions released from 65ZnO30P 2 O 5 Nb 2 O 5 glass. ZnO is known as an intermediate oxide, 12) i.e., in certain glasses, some of ZnO acts as a network former.…”

“…Phosphate invert glasses (PIG) were developed by our group for biomedical applications 26–29 . PIGs easily introduce therapeutic ions and control their release 30–32 . The use of PIGs stimulates bioactivity in vitro and in vivo 33–35 .…”
