Sodium bismuth titanate [(0.15BaTiO 3 0.85(Bi 0.5 Na 0.5)TiO 3 ], hereafter 0.15BT0.85BNT, powder was prepared using hydrothermal synthesis. The particle size was approximately 0.1¯m. In addition, 0.15BT0.85BNT ceramics were fabricated using the spark plasma sintering technique. Sintering was performed at 1273 K for 10 min. The relative density, grain size, and piezoelectric constant of the obtained ceramics were approximately 97%, 0.25¯m, and 12 pC/N, respectively. To our knowledge, this would be the first attempt to synthesize 0.15BT0.85BNT piezoceramics featuring submicron-sized grains.

This study investigates the phase formation of Zr-substituted [(Na 0.5 Bi 0.5 ) 0.80 Ba 0.20 ](Ti 1 -y Zr y )O 3 system during its solidstate synthesis. The synthesis was found to be a multistep process accompanied by the formation of a number of intermediate phases which depend on the solid solution's composition and sintering temperatures. Single-phase solid solutions were obtained when the sintering temperature was increased to 1000°C-1100°C. Increase in content of substituting Zr-ions tends to linearly increase in the size of the crystal cell leading to reduction in the tolerance factor which results in the increase in stability of the antiferroelectric phase relative to the ferroelectric phase.

The influence of the B-site ion substitutions in (1 À x)(Bi 1=2 Na 1=2 )TiO 3 -xBaTiO 3 system of solid solutions on the relative stability of the antiferroelectric (AFE) and ferroelectric (FE) phases has been studied. The ions of zirconium, tin, and (In 0:5 Nb 0:5 ), (Fe 0:5 Nb 0:5 ), (Al 0:5 V 0:5 ) ion complexes have been used as substituting elements. An increase in the concentration of the substituting ion results in a near linear variation in the size of the crystal lattice cell. Along with the cell size variation, a change in the relative stability of the AFE and FE phases takes place according to the changes of the tolerance factor of the solid solution. An increase in the tolerance factor leads to the increase in the temperature of the FE-AFE phase transition, and vice versa. Obtained results indicate the way for raising the temperature of the FE-AFE phase transition in (Bi 1=2 Na 1=2 )TiO 3 -based solid solutions.
