Structure and Chemistry of Yttria‐Stabilized Cubic‐Zirconia Symmetric Tilt Grain Boundaries

Abstract: The atomic structures of two symmetric [001] tilt grain boundaries in yttria-stabilized cubic-zirconia, ⌺5 (310) and near-⌺13 (510), are studied by Z-contrast scanning transmission electron microscopy. Both boundaries are composed of periodic arrays of highly symmetric structural units, with a distinct unit for each boundary. Oxygen K-edge electron energy-loss spectra show that the oxygen coordination is similar between the bulk and grain boundary, indicating that oxygen ions within the grain boundary reside i… Show more

“…Specific information on the atomic structure of ZrO 2 ⅐10 mol % Y 2 O 3 grain boundaries has recently been obtained by analytical high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (23,24). Making use of Z-contrast imaging and electron energy-loss spectroscopy (EELS) on a symmetric 24°[001] tilt boundary an increase of the yttrium concentration in the grain boundary core by about a factor of 2 has been found, as anticipated by early auger electron spectroscopy͞x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (25) and energy dispersive x-ray spectroscopy (22) studies.…”

“…En el caso particular del YSZ hay evidencias experimentales de que existe una segregación de vacantes de oxígeno hacia el núcleo de la frontera de grano que genera un exceso de carga positiva. Este exceso de carga positiva se compensa en la región adyacente, zona de carga espacial, con un empobrecimiento de vacantes (25,26). Las zonas de carga espacial se comportan como barreras Schottky y el transporte iónico se describe en base a este modelo (11,27).…”

“…There are already experimental and computational studies of this GB reported in the literature [10,11]. Two structural modications of this GB were already examined with positrons in [5] and we study the lower GB energy variant here.…”
