-Genetic-and environmental variation and correlation patterns were characterized for modulus of elasticity (MOE), modulus of rupture (MOR) and related wood traits: latewood proportion, wood density, spiral grain, microfibril angle and lignin content in five full-sib families of Norway spruce. The families were evaluated on the basis of clearwood specimens from the juvenile -mature wood transition zone of 93 sampled trees at age 30 year from seed. Family-means varied significantly (p < 0.05) for all wood traits studied except lignin content. MOE varied between 7.9-14.1 GPa among trees and 9.4-11.0 GPa among families. MOR varied between 47-87 MPa among trees and 61-71 MPa among families. Families remained significantly different in an analysis of specific MOE (MOE/density) and MOR (MOR/density). Hence, solely relying on wood density as a wood quality trait in tree breeding would not fully yield the potential genetic gain for MOE and MOR. Correlations between wood structural traits and specific MOE and MOR are presented and discussed.

The paper was aimed at the determination of variability of tracheid dimensions in spruce wood in relation to the position in a spruce stem. Significant changes in dimensions were found in early-wood and late-wood tracheids along the stem length and radius. There were statistically significant differences (variability along the radius) between particular annual rings. The height of 22 m showed statistically significant differences as compared with other heights (variability along the height). Differences between the length of early-wood and late-wood tracheids were not corroborated in zones CW, OW and SWL. Only in the SWP zone, statistically significant differences were found. Data sets (early-wood and late-wood tracheids) from the CW zone showed statistically significant differences as compared with other zones. On the basis of the results obtained, 3D models were created (for CW, OW, SWL and SWP zones; models for an early-wood and late-wood tracheid) describing changes in tracheid dimensions in spruce in relation to the position in a stem. In the models, the length of tracheids decreases with the height of a stem and on the other hand, with an increasing distance from the stem pith the length of tracheids increases. The importance of the paper consists in the enlargement of findings on the structure of spruce wood. In addition to this, the paper can contribute to the partial explanation of the different behaviour of physical and mechanical properties of wood in particular parts of the spruce stem.

Abstract. In this article, we raise three technical concerns about Evans' 1999 Appita Journal "variance approach" to estimating microfibril angle (MFA). The first concern is associated with the approximation of the variance of an X-ray intensity half-profile by a function of the MFA and the natural variability of the MFA. The second concern is associated with the approximation of the natural variability of the MFA by a function of the MFA. The third concern is associated with the fact that the variance approach was not designed to handle tilt in the fiber orientation. All three concerns are associated with potential biases in MFA estimates. We raise these three concerns so that other researchers interested in understanding, implementing, or extending the variance approach or in comparing the approach to other methods of estimating MFA will be aware of them.
