“Structural UHPFRC”: Welcome to the post-concrete era !

Abstract: "Structural UHPFRC" stands for Ultra-High Performance Fiber Reinforced Cementbased composite material which is complemented by reinforcing and prestressing steel to enhance structural resistance and durability. First, properties of impermeable, tensile strain hardening UHPFRC are described in view of structural applications. Then, two fundamental concepts are presented and validated by means of research results and practical applications: i) Rehabilitation and strengthening of existing concrete structures by a… Show more

“…One of the most well-known and relevant applications of UHP-FRCC is the retrofitting of existing structures, especially the jacketing of concrete columns and beams, due to these mechanical properties. The aim is to harden those parts of the existing structures that are exposed to high environmental and mechanical actions, especially in the most highly stressed cross-sections and in the structural joints [8,9,10].…”

“…Most of these studies were focused on the material properties, and only few addressed the behaviour of structural UHPC members. In this latter group of studies is included the work by Bruwhiler et al, developed at EPFL, which uses UHPC to improve the performance of both existing and new concrete structures [42,43].…”

“…One of such novel materials is the Ultra High Performance Fiber Reinforced Cementitious composite (UHPFRC) comprising cementitious matrix with small constituents (\ 1 mm) and high amount of short fibers ([ 3% vol. ), usually made of steel [1]. It is often used with longitudinal reinforcement bars in the direction of highest internal forces, forming reinforced UHPFRC (R-UHPFRC).…”
