Structural tendon changes in patients with acromegaly: assessment of Achilles tendon with sonoelastography.

Abstract: Aims: To describe the sonoelastographic appearance of the Achilles tendon in acromegalic patients and to determine whether the blood concentrations of growth hormone (GH) and insulin-like growth factor (IGF-1) are associated with the various sonographic elasticity types of Achilles tendons. Material and methods: Eighty-four Achilles tendons of 42 acromegaly patients and 84 Achilles tendons of 42 healthy volunteers were assessed with sonoelastography.

“…However, in the same study, it was reported that there was no relationship between serum GH and IGF-1 level and this increased stiffness in the Achilles tendon. [22] In our study, Achilles tendon evaluation was not performed, but TGE evaluation was similarly performed and it was found that the tissue stiffness increased similarly to the previous study. Unlike the previous study, increased organ stiffness was independently associated with serum IGF-1 levels.…”

“…We found that thyroid gland stiffness was significantly increased in patients with acromegaly in our study. Recently, Onal et al [22] reported that the Achilles tendon thickness and tendon stiffness (grade II intermediate elasticity) obtained by SE were higher in patients with acromegaly with active disease. However, in the same study, it was reported that there was no relationship between serum GH and IGF-1 level and this increased stiffness in the Achilles tendon.…”

“… SR had a negative correlation with functional score ( ρ = − 0.42, p = 0.03). Onal et al 2016 [ 35 ] 42 acromegaly patients/84 tendons. 42 healthy volunteers/84 tendons.…”

“…USE has also been studied in systemic diseases. A stiffness reduction of the Achilles tendon was observed in patients with ankylosing spondylitis [ 32 ], in diabetic patients with foot ulcers [ 33 ] and in acromegaly patients [ 35 ].…”

“…Onal et al reported that patients with acromegaly had thicker tendon than healthy subjects, especially in active phase of disease. SE analysis showed an equal distribution of hard and soft patterns, however the analysis revealed a prevalence of intermediate pattern 43 .…”
