Structural System Reliability: Overview of Theories and Applications to Optimization

Abstract: This paper provides an overview of theories and applications of structural system reliability (SSR). The paper defines SSR problems and discusses the growing needs for SSR analysis and technical challenges. Detailed literature reviews are provided for three subtopics: SSR methods for Boolean system events, SSR methods for sequential failures, and SSR-based design/topology optimization. Discussions of each subtopic define the target problem using mathematical formulations and categorize existing SSR methods in … Show more

“…In general, it is challenging to calculate the n-fold integral in Equation ( 1) when the number of random variables, n, is greater than 3 or 4 because no closed-form solution is available. Many methods have been developed to compute the probability integral [27], among which, the FORM and SORM [6,12] are widely utilized to efficiently evaluate the probability integral defined in Equation (1).…”

“…Decoupling approaches [37,38] decouple the outerloop optimization from the reliability analysis by constructing an equivalent deterministic optimization problem. A comprehensive review of the structural reliability analysis and RBDO has been presented by Song et al [27].…”

“…Among a variety of system reliability methods (Song et al 2021) that were developed to compute the series system failure probability, this study adopts the approach by Straub et al (2020) in which the FORM approximation is estimated by a sampling method. This approach was developed to cover the same kind of problems as ULS1, which is used as the limit state in this paper.…”
