Structural Safety Assessment of a Floating Dock during Docking Operation

Abstract: This paper focuses on the accuracy of the "load per meter run "criterion which is used as a simple assessment for the acceptance of a specific docking operation regarding the structural safety of an unrated caisson floating dry dock. A candidate floating dock system in Port Said Shipyard is modelled in order to illustrate the procedure followed to attain a proper decision. The development of the 3D finite element model acquires the availability of the full technical data of the floating dock. All major docking… Show more

“…In [13][14][15][16], results of strength analyses of floating docks, also under wave action, have been presented and their application in the design process has been analysed. The safety assessment of floating dock structures during docking operations by the finite element method has been carried out in [17].…”

“…The company of Goulburn-Murray Water (2012) sets the technical specifications for the floating jetties in Australia. El-Maadawy et al (2018) focused on the accuracy of load determination in checking the structural safety of a floating dry dock. They modeled an existing floating dock in the Port Said shipyard as a case study and developed a three-dimensional finite element model using full technical data of the floating dock.…”

“…Another case involved a floating dock sinking due to inaccurate positioning of keel blocks. When the floating dock emerged from the water, several keel blocks punctured the pontoon deck, causing flooding in multiple ballast tanks, rapid loss of buoyancy, and eventual sinking [6].…”
