Structural results for La Palma island using 3‐D gravity inversion

Abstract: [1] A recent gravity survey composed of 317 bench marks all over the island of La Palma (Canary Islands) is used, in combination with satellite data for regional aspects, to obtain results about structural properties of the island connected with the tectonic environment and local volcanism. To that end, a nonlinear three-dimensional gravity inversion approach is considered. The inversion scheme provides, in a nonsubjective form, the geometry of the anomalous bodies constructed in a random growth process. Resul… Show more

“…In the framework of GEOMOD project, a terrestrial gravity survey was carried out in 2006 on 317 benchmarks on the Island of La Palma (Canary Islands) (CAMACHO et al, 2009), Figure 2. The corresponding elevation values were determined simultaneously by GPS observations.…”

“…From the gravity data, CAMACHO et al (2009) obtained several results pertaining to structural properties of the island connected with the tectonic environment and local volcanism. There, a nonlinear, three-dimensional gravity inversion approach was considered to provide the geometry of the anomalous bodies constructed in a random growth process with respect to an exponentially stratified background.…”

“…Oldenburg, 1974;Chakraborty and Agarwal, 1992;Reamer and Ferguson, 1989). Camacho et al (2009 and2011a) describe a general method and a code ("GROWTH") to carry out a 3D gravity inversion in a non-subjective approach, able to determine the geometry of the causative bodies. Camacho et al (2011b) proposed a modification of the original methodology enabling to deal with isolated bodies or stratified structures in a versatile form.…”
