Structural provinces of the Ross Ice Shelf, Antarctica

Abstract: ABSTRACT. The surface of the Ross Ice Shelf (RIS) is textured by flow stripes, crevasses and other features related to ice flow and deformation. Here, moderate resolution optical satellite images are used to map and classify regions of the RIS characterized by different surface textures. Because the textures arise from ice deformation, the map is used to identify structural provinces with common deformation history. We classify four province types: regions associated with large outlet glaciers, shear zones, ex… Show more

“…I have chosen a value K c = 400 kPa normalm to represent the fracture toughness of ice shelf suture zones. This choice is based on the best available laboratory data (Rist et al, ), and was chosen to be at the high end of laboratory data to reflect the fact that suture zones appear to be more resistant to rift propagation than the surrounding ice shelf (Holland et al, ; Jansen et al, ; LeDoux et al, ; McGrath et al, ). I also invoke the laboratory measurements to support the claim that fracture toughness variations cannot entirely be responsible for the observed response of the Nascent Iceberg Rift to wave‐induced stresses.…”
