Structural proteome of human colostral fat globule membrane proteins

Abstract: Milk fat globule membrane (MFGM) contains proteins derived from the apical membrane of secreting epithelial cells of the mammary gland. Between 2-4% of total human milk protein content is associated with the fat globule fraction, as MFGM proteins. While MFGM proteins have very low classical nutritional value, they play important roles in various cell processes and defence mechanisms for the newborn. To date, fewer than 30 human MFGM proteins have been identified and characterized, either by immunological metho… Show more

“…Passing through the mammary secretory cell, fat is segregated in vesicles enveloped by the apical membrane ofthe secretory cell itselfbefore secretion, giving rise to fat globules (7)(8). The main proteins associated with human MFGM have been recently identified by combining effective solubilization procedures, 2-DE and mass spectrometry techniques (9). So far, very little has been reported about pretenn milk MFGM proteins.…”

“…Compared to MFGM very little literature is available on colostrum fat globule membranes (CFGM). The limited work carried out so far on CFGM, from human and bovine sources, has focussed on the structural and developmental proteomes [26,27,28]. In the present study the FGMs were isolated from buffalo milk and colostrum.…”
