Nowadays, filling sand is mainly used for roadbed construction. However, this material resource is gradually depleting. At the same time, sand has loose grain structure and small elastic modulus (E ≤ 40Mpa) therefore it fails to meet the technical requirements of roadbed construction. Consequently, roadbed is often embanked with alternative materials such as soil reinforced with inorganic binders, natural aggregates, and macadam. leading to high cost and environmental pollution. Therefore, it is important to determine a new type of roadbed material. This study presents several laboratory tests on the mechanical and physical properties of sand mixed with fly ash in order to find an appropriate mixture for roadbed construction. The test results show that the mixture of sand and fly ash, which contains an optimal ratio of sand/fly ash of 70%/30% with a dry volume value of 1.821g/cm³, not only meets the requirements for roadbed materials, but also utilizes more fly ash. When adopting Geopolymer technology where alkaline solution is added to reinforce sand-fly ash mixture with the ratio of sand/fly ash of 70%/30%, fly ash will be activated by the alkaline solution to produce gelatinous material through a series of reactions. The gelatinous material is characterized by the high-strength and the tightly-linked molecules. Apart from being a suitable material for roadbed construction, sand fly ash material can also be used as a foundation layer for pavement structure

Zinc oxide and Boron-doped zinc oxide (B-ZnO) thin films have been dip coated on glass substrates using Sol-Gel technique. The ZnO solution was prepared by using zinc acetate dihydrate (ZAD) as starting material. Ethanol and citric acid are used in the Sol-Gel process as solvent and solution stabilizer, respectively. Doping of boron is achieved by adding a proper molar ratio of Boric acid (H3BO3) solution to the final ZnO solvent. The optical properties of thin films were investigated using UV-vis spectrophotometer measurements. Transmittance of undoped ZnO films exhibits high values that are decreasing upon increasing the Boron concentration. We found that the index of refraction of undoped ZnO films demonstrates values ranging between 1.6 and 2.2 and increase as B concentration is increased and approximately match those of bulk ZnO. In addition, structural properties were investigated using XRD, SEM and EDAX techniques. Upon annealing, we found that the films exhibit a hexagonal structure and as B concentration increases the grain size increases and the strain decreases. Our results indicate that (B-ZnO) films could be used as seeded platforms for growing nanostructures using hydrothermal method.

The high dielectric constant presented by CaCu3Ti4O12 (CCTO) makes this material promising for industrial applications, in particular for electronic devices. Nevertheless, the preparation method and the doping by oxides has a great influence on the microstructure, and consequently in the dielectric properties. In this work we prepared and studied CCTO doped by germanium oxide, in concentrations up to 10% by weight. X-ray diffraction shows the presence of nanocristals. The grains and the grain boundaries compositions have been characterized by scanning electron microscopy with energy dispersive X-ray spectrometry mapping. The magnetization measurements show an antiferromagnetic behaviour with a Néel temperature TN=25 K, independent of the GeO2 doping (up to 6%). Analyses of the high temperature dependence of the magnetic susceptibility show that the increase of the GeO2 doping decreases the paramagnetic temperature. Dielectric spectroscopy measurements, in the frequency range from 75 kHz to 30 MHz, at room temperature, have been carried out. Cole-Cole model of dielectric relaxation adjusts correctly the data. The results, obtained with the different techniques, indicate that there is the increase of samples grain size up to 6% of germanium oxide, which causes an increase of the real and imaginary parts of complex permittivity.
