This paper presents a review of the contemporary advancements in hybrid coating applications on titanium alloys using the liquid additive manufacturing technique. Hybrid coatings represent highly functional coatings with very good hardness, wear resistance, and adhesion properties with other tailored properties for the application of aerospace, automotive, construction, and maritime industries. Within this review, a comprehensive study of the foundational principles governing hybrid coatings is highlighted with the key aspects of the selection of metallic substrates, diverse coating methods, and the characterization of coatings. A perceptive segmentation of the merits and demerits attendant to diverse surface coating processes such as liquid additive manufacturing, sol-gel deposition, laser beam techniques, thermal spraying, and micro-arc oxidation are analyzed. Based on the literature review, it can be found that TIG torch LAM technology, appears as an encouragement rendering itself both cost-effective and ecologically sustainable, this methodology not only bequeaths a meticulous control over the mantle of coating thickness and composition but also bestows upon the resultant hybrid coatings an enhanced morphology and hardness, particularly within the realm of titanium alloys. Therefore, evident is the prospect of a transformative trajectory, wherein the higher costs associated with a laser beam, liquid deposition, and sol-gel techniques are supplanted by the greener, more sustainable embrace of liquid additive manufacturing. The hybrid coating on commercial purity titanium showed that hybrid coating enhances hardness value by a factor of three to fourfold accompanied by the development of a new microstructure. In conclusion, this paper explains the reflective impact of hybrid coatings and stresses the potential of TIG torch LAM technology in advancing the field of surface engineering, particularly in the context of hybrid coating on titanium alloy materials.

The article has provided a novel way of finding the probability of fracture ( Pf) based on modifications of some established concepts. It has also discussed ductile to brittle as well as brittle to ductile transitions in the same coating/substrate system subject to differences in crystallisation, indenter sharpness, sliding modes and dislocation kinetics. The indentation positioning and nanocrystalline features cause ambiguity in the results and need meticulous analysis. As a result of increased dislocation movement, the crystalline portions toughened in contrast to the amorphous parts, which were more brittle. The Pf, which varies and reaches a maximum of 52% in the amorphous or near-amorphous area, was calculated using the Weibull distribution. Transitions between ductility and brittleness can be seen in sliding indentations. Evidence of adhesive failure, which required better coating component inspection because it happened significantly earlier, was shown. Finite-element modelling was used to analyse the stress and provide information on dislocation motions and the impact of indenter shape on fracture. The outcomes are advantageous for the production of devices based on nano/micro-electro-mechanical systems.

Emerging laser precision machining, particularly using pulsed lasers, enlightens the innovation and functionalization of cemented carbides. These backbone materials of the tooling industry are usually considered difficult to machine or shape using conventional mechanical approaches. The coating of cemented carbide tools, deemed to improve their mechanical and thermal properties, is a common supplementary surface treatment prior to their application. This work aims to study the synergic effects of nanosecond laser ablation and coating deposition on the surface, as well as the mechanical integrity of cemented carbides. In this regard, two plain WC–Co grades with different metallic binder content (10%wtCo and 15%wtCo) were first processed by a short-pulsed nanosecond laser. Subsequently, an AlTiN film was physically vapor-deposited on the laser-processed surfaces. The resulting surface integrity was assessed in terms of topographical, morphological, and microstructural changes. Mechanical integrity was evaluated in terms of indentation and sliding contact responses using Vickers hardness and scratch tests, respectively, the latter including frictional, penetrating, and sliding performances under selected surface processing conditions. In general, the nanosecond laser ablation proved to be beneficial for the mechanical integrity of coated cemented carbides in most studied cases, as it increased surface hardness, reduced penetration depth, and hindered damage during sliding. This was the case despite a slight increase in surface roughness, as well as minor morphological and microstructural changes at the coating–substrate interface, discerned.
