Structural Matching between the Polymeric Nucleating Agent Isotactic Poly(vinylcyclohexane) and Isotactic Polypropylene

Abstract: Poly(vinylcyclohexane) (PVCH) is a patented polymeric nucleating agent for isotactic polypropylene (iPP) and induces its alpha crystal modification (αiPP). The structural interactions at the root of this activity are investigated by analyzing the transcrystallization of single crystals of αiPP on single crystals of PVCH. Electron microscopy results indicate (i) a quasi-perfect two-dimensional lattice match in the contact plane, with (100)PVCH facing (110)α iPP or (1̄10)α iPP planes, and (ii) a consistent link … Show more

“…The periodicity matching between 6.5 and 6.6 Å was found in other α‐nucleating agents and iPP. Alcazar et al found that the polyvinylcyclohexane (PVCH) shared the same chain axis ( c ‐axis) repeat (≈ 6.5 Å) with iPP, and repeat distances normal to the chain axis were ≈ 21.9 Å for the (110) face of the α‐iPP and the (100) face of PVCH 33. Yoshimoto et al found that the b ‐axis dimension of sodium 2,2′‐methylene‐bis(4,6‐di‐ t ‐butylphenylene) phosphate (NA‐11) was very close to the c ‐axis dimension of iPP (≈ 6.5 Å), and further the a ‐axis dimension of the NA‐11 was about four times of the a value of iPP 34.…”

“…When the epitaxy involves two polymers with helical conformation, the tilts of the helical paths (defined as the pitch angle) can be either additive or, occasionally, compensate each other. The latter situation is found for the iPP/isotactic polyvinylcyclohexane (iPVCH, a polymeric nucleating agent for iPP) . Dimensional and structural matching is linked with the fact that the two helices have identical c ‐axis repeat distances and the tilt of the rows of side chains is similar for the two polymers: cyclohexyls in the (100) iPVCH and methyls in the (110) iPP contact planes, respectively …”
