Structural invariance of General Behavior Inventory (GBI) scores in Black and White young adults.

Abstract: In the United States, Black and White individuals show discrepant rates of diagnosis of bipolar disorder versus schizophrenia and antisocial personality disorder, as well as disparate access to and utilization of treatment for these disorders (e.g., Alegria, Chatterji et al., 2008; Chrishon et al., 2012). Such diagnostic discrepancies might stem from racially-related cognitive biases in clinical judgment or from racial biases in measurements of bipolar disorder. The General Behavior Inventory (GBI) is among th… Show more

“…A partially invariant model may be obtained if some, but not all, items are invariant on each element of the factor structure across groups (Byrne, 2010). The hypothesis of invariance is evaluated by comparing the model fit of the more restrictive model to the less restrictive model, with hypothesis of invariance being rejected when the CFI decreases by .01 or more ( ΔCFI ≥ .01; Pendergast et al, 2015).…”

“…As these measures are translated and used with more diverse populations, it will be important to test whether the psychometrics change across demographic groups. The few studies done in this regard suggest that the measurement properties of depression and hypomania/mania tend to be robust across race and ethnicity (Gamma et al, 2013; Pendergast et al, 2015), and the measures show consistent diagnostic efficiency across race/ethnicity within the United States (Jenkins et al, 2012). This is reassuring, and suggests that the measures are likely to help improve assessment across a range of demographic groups.…”

“…To test this, the chi-square difference test (Δχ 2 ) was conducted by using the DIFFTEST command provided by Mplus, and the change in Comparative Fit Index criterion (ΔCFI) was relied upon. Hypothesis of invariance is rejected when Δχ 2 has a probability lower than .05 ( p <.05) and the ΔCFI decreases by .01 or more ( ΔCFI ≥ .01) (Coertjens et al, 2012; Pendergast et al, 2015). The ΔCFI value was weighted more heavily than the Δχ 2 in evaluating change in model fit because chi-square values are more sensitive to sample size and the chi-square difference test tends to be too stringent (Pendergast et al, 2015).…”
