Structural integrity affects nitrogen removal activity of granules in semi-continuous reactors

Abstract: Granules were observed after more than two years of operation in two semi-continuously fed intermittently aerated reactors treating swine wastewater with aerobic:anoxic cycles of 1:1 h and 1:4 h. Subsequently, the granules and flocs were compared with respect to physical characteristics, activity, and microbial community structure. Granules exhibited higher specific nitrification and denitrification rates than flocs. However, once granule structural integrity was disrupted, the rates decreased to levels simila… Show more

“…Nitrosomonas sp., such as N. mobilis, were the dominant microorganisms in wastewaters, activated sludge, and N removal applications in W W T P ( J u r e t s c h k o e t a l . 1 9 9 8 ; K o o p s a n d Pommerening-Röser 2001; Limpiyakorn et al 2013;Mota et al 2014), as well as in freshwater and river sediments impacted by wastewater effluent (Cébron et al 2004). Beiyun River is a typical seasonal river receiving municipal sewage and WWTP effluent from downtown throughout the whole year.…”

“…The structure of AGS is dense and regular, with strong settling capabilities. Thanks to microorganisms’ inherent self-solidification properties, AGS maintains its structural integrity even under dynamic conditions, forming agglomerated organisms without swelling or negatively affecting water quality ( Mota et al, 2014 ). This characteristic enables AGS to efficiently remove high concentrations of toxic organic substances, nitrogen, and phosphorus ( Kishida et al, 2009 ; He et al, 2020 ; Chen H. Y. et al, 2023 ).…”

“…50 NOB_Nba were adjacent to AOB_Beta, probably because NOB_Nba needed to take in the NO 2 − generated from AOB_Beta. 46,51 Moreover, as NOB_Nba and AOB_Beta competed for the available O 2 , NOB_Nba lost out and was forced to attach to the AOB_Beta internally. 52 As shown in Figure 4c, DEN_Tb was concentrated in the interior of the composting particles, which suggested the denitrification due to DEN was an anaerobic reaction.…”
