Remote sensing techniques and spatial data analysis through Geographic Information Systems (GIS) have been jointly applied in a mineral exploration context to identify gold-rich potential areas in SE Spain. Results con rm the usefulness of this integrated methodological approach as an e V ective tool to assess mineral potential in the studied region. Satellite and airborne image analysis have o V ered valuable thematic information referring both to lithology and altered zone mapping from photointerpretation and digital classi cation. For this goal, SPOT panchromatic and Landsat TM images were merged in order to obtain high resolution image documents for photointerpretation purposes, and the Feature Principal Component Selection technique was applied to highlight hydrothermal alteration zones characterized by hydroxyl-bearing minerals. Remote sensing results were integrated, in conjunction with existing maps and data from mineral exploration surveys, into the GIS as vector or raster layers. The GIS implementation stage consisted of the creation of a relational database, including a complete set of georeferenced data, and the elaboration of a speci c user interface for spatial analysis using GIS facilities in order to establish a Decision Support System (DSS). The system was used to simulate di V erent mineral exploration scenarios, calculating and mapping a Mineral Potential Index that was interpreted in a practical sense in terms of surface reduction and economic costs.

In China, most directions of river flowing are from west to east. During historic period, since the water traffic played an important role, it was very important to form a cross-horizontal net of water carriage route. Canals should be dug so as to make up the lack of north-south river. TonNi Grand Canal, dug in the first year of DaTe (605 A. D.) in the Sui Dynasty, was the important component of north-south system of Grand Canals in China. It promoted economic and social development of the Sui, Tang and Song dynasties (605 A.D.-1279 A.D.). As Tongji Canal (i.e. Tongji Grand Canal) flowed across the Huaibei Plain, which is aggraded by abundant mud and sand deposit resulted from the Huanghe (Yellow) River flooding, many traces (such as old channel) and human culture heritages were buried under mud-sand. Tongji Canal was silted up, and disappeared in the Jin Dynasty (1115 A.D.-1234 A.D.). From then on, there were many different stories about the flowing route of the canal in historical literature. Based on space-bone and air-bone remote sensing imagery, we attempt to search the old channel of Tongji Canal, and supplement historical record. The paper discusses transformation process of Tongji Canal's traffic function, and resumptively summarizes the reasons of the transformation, which results from synthetic function of physical geographical, political, economic, and social conditions.

Geometry, kinematics, and mechanics of the interaction between strike-slip and normal faults in active rifts: An example from the Quaternary-active Kane Springs Wash fault zone, Nevada, USA

The interactions among dip-slip and strike-slip faults are critical features in rift segmentation, including strain and slip transfer between faults of different rift segments. Here, we focused on the influence of factors such as fault and fracture geometries, kinematics, and local stress fields on the interaction and linkage of synchronous strike-slip and normal faults. Well-exposed faults along the tectonically active boundary between the central and northern Basin and Range provided for both reliable geometric data and consideration of rift segment development. We documented relative ages and distributions of Quaternary deposits, scarps, and geometries of three ~20–65-km-long Quaternary faults: the N-striking, normal Coyote Spring fault; the ENE-striking, left-lateral Kane Springs Wash fault; and the N-striking, normal Wildcat Wash fault. The normal faults bend to accommodate slip-type differences across linkage zones, with the strike-slip fault and local processes influencing interactions. Influenced by the local stress field of the Kane Springs Wash fault, the Coyote Spring fault bends SE as it approaches and links to the Kane Springs Wash fault. Influenced by the off-fault or process-zone fractures of the Kane Springs Wash fault, the Wildcat Wash fault bends NE and links with the Kane Springs Wash fault. The Kane Springs Wash fault continues beyond the normal fault terminations, suggesting slip transfer between them via the Kane Springs Wash fault. These relations and the ages of offset units suggest that activity on the faults was approximately synchronous despite slip-type differences. Consequently, in slip transfer, the local strike-slip stress environment and off-fault fractures influenced the geometry of the normal fault terminations; the strike-slip fault formed a boundary to dip-slip fault propagation; and this boundary facilitated kinematic and geodetic segmentation, forming a Basin and Range rift segment boundary.
