UNCTAD identified the structural factors of commercial ports and introduced the general definition of 'port generation'. Third-generation ports were born with the container revolution in the last decades of the 20th century. The container became the main unit for the transport of goods, both intermediate and finished, between production and consumption regions. Containerization allowed the globalization of the economy and ports became the nodes of the global supply chain. The paper proposes a methodology, based on consolidated theoretical models, to ex-ante evaluate the current and future scenarios of an international commercial port. The methodology has been applied to the container port of Gioia Tauro, with the aim to verify its ability to become a third-generation port as a generator of value added, rather than only a centre of cost. The results of the application allowed to identifying the development direction and the planned interventions in the port, as far as concerns general transport, agri-food logistics and mechanical logistics.

This paper examines the current challenges faced by logistics with a focus on the agri-food sector. After outlining the context, a review of the literature on the relationship between logistics and strategic management in gaining and increasing competitiveness in the agri-food sector is conducted. In particular, the flow of the paper is as follows: after examining the aforementioned managerial problem and its broader repercussions, the paper proceeds to address two main research questions. First, how and by which tools can digitization contribute to improving supply chain management and sustainability in logistics? Second, what are the main managerial and strategic implications and consequences of this for the agri-food sector in terms of efficiency, effectiveness, cost reduction, and supply chain optimization? Finally, the paper presents Italy as a case study, chosen both for its peculiar internal differences in logistical infrastructures and entrepreneurial management between Northern and Southern regions (which could be at least partially overcome with the use of new technologies and frameworks) and for the importance of the agri-food sector for the domestic economy (accounting about 25% of the country’s GDP), on which digitization should have positive effects in terms of value creation and sustainability.

Emerging information and communication technologies (ICTs) were identified as the main pillar of the fifth-generation ports. Ports' issues were solved with stand-alone ICT solutions adopted by each stakeholder. Today new benefits and challenges are connected with the introduction of shared emerging ICTs among port stakeholders, generating efficiencies in the solution of shared decisions. One of the tools that supports the interaction between port stakeholders is the Port Community System (PCS), which has been the object of numerous studies in recent years aimed at defining its benefits in terms of reducing the costs, or disutilities, of port operations. The paper presents a state of the art relating the Port Community Systems (PCS), in which a classification of scientific papers selected from the scientific databases present on the web is reported according to some classification criteria. The results of this analysis show that in the last decade the study and implementation, even experimental, of the PCSs inside ports has undergone a relevant acceleration. This is due to the fact that for port communities, being equipped with the PCS is now of strategic importance since its presence increases the competitiveness of the whole port. The work is useful both for port planners and for technicians of port manufacturing equipment companies, because it allows to identify the potential advantages obtained with the introduction of advanced evolutions of PCS.
