Thermochronologic studies of the Santaquin and Farmington Canyon crystalline basement complexes, exposed in the footwall of the Wasatch fault in Utah, provide rare opportunities to investigate the long-term tectonic, burial, and exhumation history of this region. Both complexes underwent amphibolite-facies metamorphism at ~1700 Ma, followed by a complex pressure-temperature-time history. By 740-770 Ma, exhumation had brought both complexes to the surface from a depth of 9-10 km (3-3.5 kbar), followed by reburial by passive margin, Oquirrh Basin, and foreland basin sedimentation from Neoproterozoic through early Cretaceous time.The final structural pathway to present-day surface exposure of both complexes began in early Cretaceous time, with crustal contraction along the Sevier belt and resultant structural stacking. Structural breaching of the thrust culminations and final cooling of the crystalline complexes occurred as a result of Tertiary through Holocene extension and accompanying normal faulting.Inferred exhumation rates for the last 10-15 my are on the order of 0.3-0.6 mm/yr, although recent slip rates across the Wasatch fault appear to be several times higher. This suggests that: (1) periods of enhanced slip on the Wasatch fault from Miocene to present time may have been punctuated by periods of quiescence; and (2) the fault now may be experiencing an episode of rapid slip. Alternatively, strain may have been partitioned into multiple fault strands at a boundary between the Provo and Nephi segments.

The Confusion Range in west-central Utah has been considered a broad structural trough or synclinorium with little overall shortening. However, new structural studies indicate that the Confusion Range is more accurately characterized as an east-vergent, fold-thrust system with ~10 km of horizontal shortening during Late Jurassic to Eocene Cordilleran contractional deformation. For this study, four balanced and retrodeformable cross sections across the Confusion Range and adjacent Tule Valley were constructed using existing mapping and new fi eld data, and these were tied with a fi fth strike-parallel section. Ramp anticlines and anticlinal duplexes characteristic of strong Lower Paleozoic carbonate units are balanced by faulted and rotated detachment folds in more ductile Upper Paleozoic strata. The apparently synclinal aspect results from two different sets of thrust structures that uplift and expose Lower Paleozoic rocks on the fl anks of the range. Fold-thrust structures are continuous southward for more than 130 km, forming a thrust belt of regional extent herein named the western Utah thrust belt. This thrust belt is comparable in length and magnitude of shortening to the central Nevada thrust belt, and both merge southward with the Sevier frontal thrust belt. Together, these and related fold-thrust zones in eastern Nevada indicate signifi cant, broadly distributed Mesozoic shortening in the Sevier hinterland. The Cordilleran thrust belt in eastern Nevada and western Utah thus consists of a frontal zonethe Sevier frontal thrust belt-where major thrust faults with 50-100 km of displacement breach the surface, and a hinterland zone, characterized by a number of distributed fold-thrust belts, each accommodating on the order of 10 km of shortening.

We utilize carbonate clumped isotope thermometry to explore the diagenetic and thermal histories of exhumed brachiopods, crinoids, cements, and host rock in the Permian Palmarito Formation, Venezuela, and the Carboniferous Bird Spring Formation, Nevada, USA. Carbonate components in the Palmarito Formation, buried to ~4 km depth, yield statistically indistinguishable clumped isotope temperatures [T(Δ 47 )] ranging from 86 to 122 °C. Clumped isotope temperatures of components in the more deeply buried Bird Spring Formation (>5 km) range from ~100 to 165 °C and differ by component type, with brachiopods and pore-filling cements yielding the highest T(Δ 47 ) (mean = 153 and 141 °C, respectively) and crinoids and host rock yielding significantly cooler T(Δ 47 ) (mean = 103 and 114 °C). New high-resolution thermal histories are coupled with kinetic models to predict the extent of solid-state C-O bond reordering during burial and exhumation for both sites. Application of these models, termed "THRMs" (thermal history reordering models), suggests that brachiopods in the Palmarito Formation experienced partial bond reordering without complete equilibration of clumped isotopes at maximum burial temperature. In contrast, clumped isotope bonds of brachiopods from the Bird Spring Formation completely equilibrated at maximum burial temperature, and now reflect blocking temperatures achieved during cooling. The 40-50-°C-cooler clumped isotope temperatures measured in Bird Spring Formation crinoids and host rock can be explained by recrystallization and cementa tion during shallow burial combined with a greater inherent resistance to solid-state reordering than brachiopods.
