Structural Evidence for Environment‐driven Transformation of the Blue Galaxies in Local Abell Clusters: A85, A496, and A754

Abstract: We present a detailed comparison of structural properties in the rest-frame V band of cluster and field galaxies, selected and analyzed in the same manner, to test the hypothesis that much of the current cluster galaxy membership resulted from the fairly rapid (1-2 Gyr) transformation of infalling, field spirals into red, cluster early types. Specifically, we have selected $140 galaxies from three nearby Abell clusters (A85, A496, and A754) that have colors significantly bluer than the red sequence population … Show more

“…This suggests that galaxies in RX J0142.0ϩ2131 have undergone bursts of star formation over a range in epochs. The fact that the S0 galaxies have lower and larger scatter M/L V is consistent with results suggesting they form stars at lower redshift or are more recent additions to clusters (e.g., Treu et al 2003;McIntosh et al 2004).…”

“…The values for R T and R A are approximately equal to the total and asymmetric residual flux, respectively, and are expressed as a fraction of the total galaxy flux. The discriminating power of R T þ R A , as computed by GIM2D, has been demonstrated by Im et al (2002) and McIntosh et al (2004). We compute R T þ R A within two half-light radii.…”

“…They also imply that field galaxies, which are generally bluer than cluster galaxies (see, for example, Lewis et al 2002;McIntosh et al 2004), fall into the cluster environment, turn red (possibly via some process that truncates star formation), and that blue dwarf galaxies get preferentially disrupted or transformed into red dwarfs at small clustercentric radii.…”

“…This has led to the hypothesis that clusters are builtup gradually from the infall of field galaxies (e.g., Ellingson et al 2001;Treu et al 2003;McIntosh et al 2004).…”
