Structural Diversity in Metal Complexes with a Dinucleating Ligand Containing Carboxyamidopyridyl Groups

Abstract: The synthesis of a carboxyamidopyridine-pyrazolate dinucleating ligand (H5bppap) is described. Bimetallic iron and cobalt complexes of H5bppap ([MII2H2bppap]+) showed structural differences in both their primary and secondary coordination spheres. The binding of small molecules into the pre-organized ligand cavity is verified by the hydration of [FeII2H2bppap]+ and [CoII2H2bppap]+, leading to the formation of the complexes [{CoII(OH)}CoIIH3bppap]+ and [{FeII(OH)}-FeIIH3bppap]+, in which one of the metal center… Show more

“…In addition, our ligands include H-bond donors within the secondary coordination sphere to form intramolecular H-bonding networks with the M–OH units; 9,7d these types of noncovalent interactions have previously been exploited in the isolation of mononuclear M–OH analogues. 10 Two earlier versions of this design contained urea ([H 4 P R buam] 5- ) 11 and carboxyamidopyridyl ([H 3 bppap] 2- ) 12 groups (Fig. 1) but we were unable to prepare dinuclear M–OH complexes.…”
