Structural Design and Control of a Morphing Winglet to optimize the Aerodynamic Performance of the CRJ-700 Aircraft. Part 2 – Control

Abstract: In this study, the morphing technology was applied on winglets for the CRJ-700 transport regional aircraft with the aim to improve its aerodynamic performance. The LARCASE Virtual Research Simulator VRESIM is equipped with highest Level D certified flight data for the CRJ-700. The flight and geometrical data of the CRJ-700 were used to quantify the aerodynamic benefits of the CRJ-700 equipped with a morphing winglet versus its reference winglet. The structural design and the mechanism allowing its rotation wer… Show more

“…Although winglets are helpful during the takeoff phase of the flight where the induced drag is the dominant drag force, they can be detrimental to the performance of the aircraft during cruise flight. In a study conducted by Meyran et al (2021), they showed the drag generated for different winglet cant angle configuration for the winglet of Bombardier's CRJ-700 [10]. Unsurprisingly, the least amount of drag and the greatest amount of lift were observed when the cant angle was 0°at 0°angle of attack [10].…”

“…It has been proven in multiple studies that the morphing wing can improve the lift-to-drag ratio, expand the flight envelope, and increase the maneuverability of the aircraft [9]. Adapted from morphing wing technology, the morphing winglets have also gained popularity in recent times since the conventional winglet represents an additional structure at the tip of the wing which increases the profile drag [10]. The morphing winglet is theoretically able to change shape during flight by altering its cant, sweep, and toe angles.…”
