Structural Definition and Mass Estimation of Lunar Surface Habitats for the Lunar Architecture Team Phase 2 (LAT-2) Study

Abstract: The Lunar Architecture Team Phase 2 study defined and assessed architecture options for a Lunar Outpost at the Moon's South Pole. The Habitation Focus Element Team was responsible for developing concepts for all of the Habitats and pressurized logistics modules particular to each of the architectures, and defined the shapes, volumes and internal layouts considering human factors, surface operations and safety requirements, as well as Lander mass and volume constraints. The Structures Subsystem Team developed s… Show more

“…18 is a representative picture of the core crush testing apparatus used to determine specific material properties, and more specifically, the E 22 , or E c , thru the thickness modulus of the core. The core crush specimens had A = 9in 2 , with L c = 0.66 inches and the L fs = .030 inches. And were 3 inches by 3 inches wide.…”

“…al. provide sizing estimates for pressure vessels in lunar habitats [10], which have been incorporated into the logistical analyses of other missions, including the MDRA DSH [9]. Despite a harsh launch environment characterized by significant dynamic and quasistatic loads, the primary load case for a rigid vessel comes from the pressure it contains.…”

“…The challenge in an expandable system is that all of the components must pack in a smaller volume than the operational volume of the system. [4][5][6] There is often the need to invoke seemingly mutually exclusive properties in order to solve the challenging engineering problems associated with space-based expandable structures. The structure must be very robust/stiff, but very lightweight.…”
