Structural control and biomedical applications of plasmonic hollow gold nanospheres: A mini review

Abstract: Hollow gold nanospheres (HGNs) are core/shell structures with a dielectric material core, usually composed of solvent, and a gold metal shell. Such structures have two metal/dielectric interfaces to allow interaction between the gold metal with the interior and external dielectric environment. Upon illumination by light, HGNs exhibit unique surface plasmon resonance (SPR) properties compared to solid gold nanoparticles. Their SPR absorption/scattering can be tuned by changing their diameter, shell thicknesses,… Show more

“…Among many nano-scale materials, hollow gold nanoparticles (HAuNP) have become an excellent candidate for drug delivery due to their cavity structure, high availability of internal and external surfaces, good biosafety, biocompatibility, and functional capabilities [112]. The surface plasmon absorption band of HAuNP can be adjusted by adjusting the inner diameter and thickness of the gold shell from visible light to near-infrared.…”

“…59 The HGNs benefit from the enhancement of the EM field by both the interior and exterior surfaces. 20 With the addition of the spikes, the relative enhancement factor increased by 3 orders of magnitude, which can be explained by the increase in the number of active binding sites for the analyte molecules and by the antenna effect of the spikes. 51 The relative enhancement factor shown here is an order of magnitude higher than previously reported HNSs, 59 likely due to the increased amount of silver, causing an increased spike tip Finally, with the addition of a silver layer to the HNSs, AgHNSs exhibit a 5630-fold enhancement from HGNs.…”

“…NPS have witnessed a large spectrum of applications nowadays. One of the most important is their use as a diagnostic tool for example by functionalizing the surface of NPs (e.g., gold NPs) with biological matter such as antibodies that can detect the presence of certain proteins correlated to a given disease [158]. In addition, NPs have become a center of attention because of their magnetic properties, such as iron oxide considered as superparamagnetic NPs.…”
