Structural Behaviour of Hollow Core Reinforced Self Compacting Concrete One Way Slabs

Abstract: Hollow-core slab (HCS) is a voided slab that has longitudinal voids made by recycled plastic pipes that were placed in the middle of the slab thickness where the flexural stress is minimum. These longitudinal voids can reduce the volume of slabs to more than 30% which leads to save raw materials and satisfying sustainability, economic considerations, and a clean environment. The experimental program comprised casting six slabs with dimensions of 1700mm × 435mm ×125mm, one of them was solid slab as a reference … Show more

“…Bubbled slab, waffle slab, and hollow-cored slab (HCS) structures are commonly applied to reduce the weight of large-span-length slabs. 1 The HCS system was developed in the 1950s and is still widely used in long-span structures such as discount stores, semiconductor factories, and distribution centers. 2,3 Polyvinyl chloride (PVC) pipes are used to provide longitudinal voids in the HCS structure.…”

“…In general, the self-weight of the structures represents a very large portion of the existing design weight, thus, implementing a practical technique to reduce such type of weight is required more and more since it is resulting in reducing the accumulated design loads and the size of foundations [1][2][3][4][5]. Using lightweight concrete is considered a general method that can be applied to all types of structural members [6][7][8][9].…”

“…2. Front view of reinforced bubbled slab [8] Mahdi and Ismael [9] Investigated the behaviour of six slab specimens with dimensions of 435 mm × 1700 mm × 125 mm experimentally, one of which was a solid slab, and the others were Hollow-core slab (HCS) made from recycled plastic pipes. These slab specimens were distributed into two groups, the first group contained three HCS specimens having different numbers of voids in the longitudinal direction, and the second one contained three HCS specimens having the same number of voids in the longitudinal direction with different diameters.…”
