Conventional emulsion polymerization (also called macroemulsion polymerization) has been widely used in a variety of industries whereas nucleation and polymerization directly in submicron monomer droplets (i.e., miniemulsion polymerization) has been primarily an academic curiosity. However, much interest has recently been generated on the basis of the prospects of incorporating very hydrophobic ingredients into a water-based system via miniemulsion polymerization. In this work, a very hydrophobic acrylic monomer, 2-ethylhexyl acrylate, is copolymerized with methyl methacrylate using a miniemulsion recipe. The goal of this paper is to examine emulsion copolymerization kinetics for monomers of very different water solubilities. It is believed that the effects of water solubility differences between comonomers are minimized using a miniemulsion recipe. In this case, the copolymer composition is more uniform in batch miniemulsion copolymerization experiments, relative to batch macroemulsion copolymerizations. The same behavior is, however, not observed in a continuous-stirred tank reactor. At even moderate steady-state conversions, there is a substantial driving force for monomer transport that favors incorporation of the more water-soluble comonomer.

Acrylic copolymers have achieved prime importance in various avenues of industrial application such as adhesive in packaging and construction, binder and stabilizer in textiles, base coat in leather, topcoat in fl oor polish, pigment binder in paper industries, etc. Acrylic resins are generally known to have superior exterior durability and weather resistance compared to other organic binders/fi lm-formers commonly used in surface coatings. Th e emulsion polymerization of acrylic monomers provides a good combination of performance properties required in fi lm formation. Th ese properties depend on the copolymer composition, particle size, molecular weight, glass transition temperature (Tg), morphology of the latex particles, etc.In this chapter, the reaction components and polymerization process conditions that aff ect the inherent characteristics of the polymers are presented. Th ere is a discussion of the incorporation of comonomer, which would lead to an improvement in the fl exibility of fi lms produced along with adhesion, gloss, hardness, solvent resistance, water resistance, etc. Also, there is a recently developed successful approach for achieving balanced properties which involves the copolymerization of fi lm-forming monomers like acrylate and methacrylates with crosslinkable monomers.

Copolymer of monomer 2,4-dichlorophenylacrylate (2,4-DCPA) and methylmethacrylate (MMA) were synthesized with different monomer feed ratio using dimethylformamide (DMF) as a solvent and 2,2'-azobisisobutyronitrile (AIBN) as an initiator at 70 o C. The copolymers were characterized by IR-Spectroscopy and copolymer composition was determined with UV-Spectroscopy. The linearization method of Fineman Ross (F-R) and Kelen Tudos (K-T) were used to obtain the monomer reactivity ratios. Thermal analyses of polymer were carried out in nitrogen atmosphere thermal gravimetric analyses (TGA) and differential thermal analyses (DTA). The molecular weight and intrinsic viscosity were determined by vapor pressure osmometry (VPO). The homo and copolymers were tested for their antimicrobial properties against selected microorganisms.
