Conventional orthodontic treatment with the use of stainless steel may be detrimental to oral health by promoting demineralizing lesions appearance and increasing adhesion and formation of bacterial biofilm, inducing the development of cavities. An alternative that has been researched to reduce the side effects of orthodontic treatment is the coating of materials with antimicrobial nanoparticles. Nanometric-sized particles increase their surface area and contact with the microbial membrane, consequently intensifying their bacteriostatic and bactericidal effect. In this work, hydrothermal synthesis, a "green" process was used to attach silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) to the surface of two different brands of orthodontic wires. The coated materials were analyzed for their physicochemical properties by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD) and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), which showed the distribution of AgNPs along the wires without modifying their properties. In the microbiological test, one of the brands showed a statistically significant difference in microbial adhesion and biofilm formation by Staphylococcus aureus and HIGHLIGHTS  Hydrothermal process was effective used in a one-pot synthesis of silver nanoparticles-based wires.  Hydrothermal synthesis process did not affect physical chemistry properties of wires.  Orthodontic wires coated silver nanoparticles from presented antimicrobial activity.  The material produced is promising for orthodontic treatment. IntroductionThis study aimed to evaluate denture care and hygiene and oral health‐related quality of life (OHRQoL) among complete denture (CD) wearers in the Eastern Province of Saudi Arabia.MethodologyThis cross‐sectional study was conducted on CD wearers in the Eastern Province of Saudi Arabia. A pre‐tested questionnaire was administered among study participants. Questionnaire was divided in three sections: (1) patients' demographic data, (2) awareness and maintenance of CD and (3) OHRQoL. Independent sample t‐test and one‐way ANOVA test were performed.ResultsThe study included data of 300 participants with 71% of males and 28% of females. Majority of participants (82.7%) cleaned CD daily, removed CD while sleeping (88.0%) and knew that unhygienic dentures can cause oral infection (92.7%). Only 19.3% used denture cleansing tables, 41% used toothpaste, and 60.7% rinsed CD with water. Regarding OHIP‐DENT domains, highest score was for functional limitation domain (2.20 ± 1.67) and the lowest for handicap domain (0.94 ± 1.09). The mean OHIP‐DENT score of the sample was 12.02 ± 8.52. Females (p = 0.006), participants below 65 years of age (p = 0.029), non‐Saudis (p = 0.042), those with university education (p = 0.030) and low monthly income (p = 0.045) and participants who visited dentist due to problem with CD (p = 0.041) demonstrated significantly higher mean OHIP‐DENT score.ConclusionMajority of participants demonstrated appropriate denture care behaviours because they were aware of the importance of denture care and hygiene. Female gender, age below 65 years, non‐Saudi nationality, university education, low monthly income and visiting dentist due to problem were related to poor OHRQoL.

Background and Objectives: Acrylic resins remain the materials of choice for removable prosthesis due to their indisputable qualities. The continuous evolution in the field of dental materials offers practitioners today a multitude of therapeutic options. With the development of digital technologies, including both subtractive and additive methods, workflow has been considerably reduced and the precision of prosthetic devices has increased. The superiority of prostheses made by digital methods compared to conventional prostheses is much debated in the literature. Our study’s objective was to compare the mechanical and surface properties of three types of resins used in conventional, subtractive, and additive technologies and to determine the optimal material and the most appropriate technology to obtain removable dentures with the highest mechanical longevity over time. Materials and Methods: For the mechanical tests, 90 samples were fabricated using the conventional method (heat curing), CAD/CAM milling, and 3D printing technology. The samples were analyzed for hardness, roughness, and tensile tests, and the data were statistically compared using Stata 16.1 software (StataCorp, College Station, TX, USA). A finite element method was used to show the behavior of the experimental samples in terms of the crack shape and its direction of propagation. For this assessment the materials had to be designed inside simulation software that has similar mechanical properties to those used for obtaining specimens for tensile tests. Results: The results of this study suggested that CAD/CAM milled samples showed superior surface characteristics and mechanical properties, comparable with conventional heat-cured resin samples. The propagation direction predicted by the finite element analysis (FEA) software was similar to that observed in a real-life specimen subjected to a tensile test. Conclusions: Removable dentures made from heat-cured resins remain a clinically acceptable option due to their surface quality, mechanical properties, and affordability. Three-dimensional printing technology can be successfully used as a provisional or emergency therapeutic solution. CAD/CAM milled resins exhibit the best mechanical properties with great surface finishes compared to the other two processing methods.
