The S=3/2, quasi-1D zig-zag chain Heisenberg antiferromagnet Li 3 RuO 4 has been investigated using inelastic neutron scattering, neutron diffraction and μSR measurements on a powder sample. Our neutron diffraction and μSR studies confirm a long-range ordering of the magnetic moments on the Ru 5+ cations below 40 K. The magnetic excitations were measured at various temperatures above and below the three-dimensional (3D) ordering temperature in order to understand the broad peak observed in the temperature dependence of the magnetic susceptibility.At 5 K we have observed two well-defined magnetic excitations at 5.5 meV and 8.5 meV, and a weak low-energy peak near ~2 meV. We interpret the 5.5 meV energy peak as a 1D zone boundary mode and that at 8.5 meV as arising from a maximum away from the zone-boundary in the dispersion curve for spin-wave modes along the chain of Ru 5+ ions. The weaker peak near 2 meV is thought to arise from a weak inter-chain coupling. Our data are best reproduced using a model with three intrachain interactions and one weak interchain interaction. The experimental spin-exchange interactions are in good agreement with those calculated for a 1D model by DFT methods. Furthermore, above T N we observe strong diffuse scattering at the same Q-position as 2 the 5.5 meV mode, which suggests the presence of short-range magnetic correlations above T N .We have estimated the correlation length, ξ ~2.9 Å at 50 K, which is close to 2.99 Å, the shortest distance between the Ru 5+ cations along the zig-zag chain.

Compared with conventional positive electrode materials in Li‐ion batteries, Li‐rich materials have a huge advantage of large specific capacities of >300 mAh g−1. Anionic redox mechanism is proposed to explain the over‐capacity, which means anions can participate in the redox process for charge compensation. The concept enriches the range and design considerations of high‐energy‐density positive electrode materials for both Li‐ion and Na‐ion batteries, which therefore arouses extensive attention. This review summarizes the progress of anionic redox in rechargeable batteries in recent years and discusses the fundamental mechanism that triggers anionic redox. Moreover, the state‐of‐the‐art materials involving anionic redox are illustrated, accompanied by the challenges for practical applications. Furthermore, the common techniques for monitoring anionic redox are reviewed and compared for an advisable choice in future studies. Finally, the consideration and discussion for designing stable positive electrodes based on cationic and anionic redox are presented. The perspective is highlighted and this review provides a basic understanding of anionic redox in rechargeable batteries and paves the way to develop high‐capacity positive electrodes for high‐energy battery systems.

Li7MO6 (M = Bi, Ru, Os) have been synthesized by solid state reaction of Li2O with Bi2O3, or MO2 (M = Ru, Os) and characterized using powder X‐ray diffraction, differential scanning calorimetry, magnetic susceptibility (for M = Ru, Os), ionic conductivity and 6Li solid state NMR (for M = Bi) measurements. All three compounds exhibit a temperature induced triclinic – rhombohedral phase transition. Structures of the new low temperature triclinic phases have been refined by the Rietveld method from powder X‐ray data using atomic parameters of Li7TaO6 as a starting model (Li7BiO6: triclinic, $P{\bar 1}$, a = 5.5071(1), b = 6.0425(1), c = 5.5231(1) Å, α = 116.912(1), β = 120.867(1), γ = 62.234(1)°, V = 133.96(1) Å3, Z = 1, T = 230 K; Li7RuO6: triclinic, $P{\bar 1}$, a = 5.3654(1), b = 5.8584(1), c = 5.3496(1) Å, α = 117.182(1), β = 119.117(1), γ = 62.632(1)°, V = 124.43(1) Å3, Z = 1, T = 295 K; Li7OsO6: triclinic, $P{\bar 1}$, a = 5.3786(1), b = 5.8725(1), c = 5.3591(1) Å, α = 117.193(1), β = 119.277(1), γ = 62.700(1)°, V = 125.15(1) Å3, Z = 1, T = 295 K). Upon cooling, Li7RuO6 and Li7OsO6 undergo a magnetic transition at 12 and 13 K, respectively, from the paramagnetic to the antiferromagnetic state. The higher ionic conductivity of Li7BiO6 at T < 300 °C, as compared to Li7RuO6 and Li7OsO6, can be ascribed to the undergoing of the triclinic – rhombohedral transition at a much lower temperature. At T > 300 °C, the ionic conductivity of all three compounds increases sharply due to the melting of the lithium sublattice; for Li7RuO6 and Li7OsO6 the latter effect is superimposed by the phase transitions to the rhombohedral modifications.
