“…Although we focused on our study in microbial‐mediated leaf decomposition, the mesh bags used allow the entrance of small invertebrates that may have also contributed to the loss of mass from leaves. Based on previous studies (Lima‐Fernandes et al ., ; Pereira et al ., 2016, 2017) and the visual inspection of our leaf bags through our experiment, invertebrate communities were dominated by taxa belonging to Trichoptera, Plecoptera and Ephemeroptera in the Oliveira stream (Lima‐Fernandes et al ., ; Pereira et al ., ), while in the Este River, invertebrate communities were dominated by Oligochaeta and Chironomidae (personal observations of the authors). Thus, the differences in invertebrate communities may have also contributed to the differences found on leaf decomposition rates between streams.…”
