“…In Lymnaea stagnalis, the penial complex is innervated by multiple peptides (Li et al, 1992;van Kesteren et al, 1995a;de Lange et al, 1998). Neurons innervating the penial complex originate in the right cerebral, pleural, pedal, and parietal ganglia (de Boer et al, 1996;de Lange et al, 1998).…”

“…A cDNA clone has been characterized that encodes a precursor protein expressed in these cells . The predicted precursor contains multiple copies of the sequence Ala-Pro-Gly-Trp-Gly (which is posttranslationally processed to generate Ala-Pro-Gly-Trp-amide [APGWamide]), four connecting peptide sequences, and a Cterminal anterior lobe peptide (CALP; Li et al, 1992). Neurons of the right anterior lobe constitute the major site of expression of the APGWamide gene in Lymnaea (Croll et al, 1991b;Croll and Van Minnen, 1992), suggesting that peptides derived from the precursor are secreted at or near the penial complex and are involved in the control of aspects of male mating behavior.…”

“…Besides APGWamide, a whole slew of other neuropeptides seems to be involved in the movement of the male copulatory apparatus (e.g. De Lange et al, 1998;Croll et al, 1991;Li et al, 1992;Van Golen et al, 1995a, Van Golen et al, 1995bSmit et al, 2003). Based on our findings we suggest that many of these will be involved in the fine-tuned movements of the male copulatory apparatus after eversion, i.e.…”

“…the preputium muscle bands (Croll et al, 1991;Li et al, 1992). In vivo, the injection of this neuropeptide into the blood indeed induces eversion of the preputium (De Boer et al, 1997b).…”
