Structural Analysis of Low Level Gambling Behavior in College Students

Abstract

Purpose: In this study the fitness of a path model was examined for relationships among loneliness, motives for gambling, gambling risk factor, self-efficacy to control gambling, and low level gambling behavior in college students. Methods: Participants were 410 college students selected from 4 universities and data collection was done between September 22 and October 24, 2014 using self-report questionnaires. Data were analyzed using IBM SPSS 19.0 and AMOS 20.0 programs. Results: Motives for gambling, self-efficacy to control gambling, directly affected college students' low level gambling behavior, while loneliness, gambling risk factor, gambling motives affected it indirectly. This study also showed that the modified path model is efficient and appropriate to analyze college students' low level gambling behavior. Conclusion: These results suggest that college students' low level gambling behavior can be decreased by reducing loneliness, gambling motives, gambling risk factor and increasing self-efficacy to control gambling. Thus, in order to prevent college students' low level gambling behavior, there is a need to design an intervention program which focuses on reducing loneliness, gambling motives, gambling risk factor, and on reinforcing self-efficacy to control gambling. 서 론1. 연구의 필요성 최근 사행산업을 이용하는 인구는 지속적으로 증가하고 있 으며[1], 합법 사행사업의 범위와 규모도 확대되어 가고 있어 [2] 개인과 사회에 미치는 부정적 영향이 지대하며, 특히 대학 생의 도박문제에 대한 관심이 증대되고 있다. 미국의 경우 대 학생의 87%가 도박을 한 경험이 있으며[3], 국내의 경우도 대 학생의 94.6%가 도박을 한 경험이 있는 것으로 보고[4]되는 등 대학생의 도박행동의 수위가 갑자기 올라가고 있어[5], 대 학생의 도박행동 관련 연구와 적극적인 개입이 필요함을 알 수 있다. 대학생의 경우 성인기로 이행되면서 도박의 종류 중 심각한 위기에 빠질 수 있는 사행성 도박에 합법적인 접근이 가능하 여[3,6-8], 중 ․ 고등학생에 비해 보다 높은 위험에 처해 있다고 ⓒ 2015 The Korean Academy of Psychiatric and Mental Health Nursing
