“…Most publications indicate that the symptoms of strongyloidiasis in dogs include dermatological manifestations, signs of lung damage (shortness of breath, cough, wheezing, mucus secretion) and gastrointestinal lesions [1,6]. In dogs with immunosuppression in addition to the symptoms described above, there may be hematocesis, hematomesis [9]. The chronic course of the invasion is accompanied by weight loss, loss of appetite, stunted growth and development of puppies and young dogs.…”

“…However, in immunocompromised patients, strongyloidiasis can cause severe generalized and complicated fatal systemic infections from exponential multiplication and dissemination of autoinfective S. stercoralis third-stage larvae (aL3) which involve gastrointestinal, respiratory, central nervous systems [20,21]. Hyperinfection syndrome occurs when aL3 penetrate the small intestinal mucosa in large numbers and migrate somatically, resulting in severe systemic symptoms and organ failure [22]. Hyperinfection syndrome is commonly reported in individuals under corticosteroid treatment and cases of human Tlymphotropic virus type 1 (HTLV-1) co-infection with S. stercoralis [21,23].…”

“…The hatched firststage larvae (L1) contaminate the environment through the faeces. In the environment, L1 moult to infective third-stage larvae (L3) that can infect a host primarily by penetration of the skin and rarely by ingestion (4). The transmammary route of infection is also described, but it is controversial and can occur if the bitch gets infected in late gestation and during lactation (5,6).…”

“…Autoinfection can occur if the L1 develop to infective L3 before leaving the host's digestive tract, and is often associated with immunosuppression. Immunocompromised dogs may also develop a severe hyperinfection (L3 that migrate throughout the body) that is related to the acute form of the disease (1,4). The prepatent period is 5-21 days (1).…”
