Strongly Emitting Fluorophores Based on 1-Azaperylene Scaffold

Abstract: A novel blue-emitting polycyclic aromatic system was synthesized via anion-radical coupling. Its efficient direct hydroxylation led to a phenol possessing an intramolecular hydrogen-bond system. Since the energy gap difference between the enol and keto forms of this molecule is very small, characteristic of ESIPT chromophores, bathochromically shifted fluorescence was not observed.

“…HBQs seems a very good group to study some of the abovementioned phenomena and also to establish whether these compounds are tautomeric or not, considering that 12-hydroxy-1-azaperylene, a close analogue, has been found to be tautomeric [19,20,21]. …”

“…Synthesis of SJA azo hybrid fluorescent dyes SJA-1 to SJA-7 has been accomplished in dry distilled DMF solvent at temperature 110°C [31,32]. Temperature was not allowed to go beyond this temperature to avoid the decomposition of DMF, which may impart its role for substitution of nitrogen in the ring in place of oxygen.…”
