Strongly cluster size dependent reaction behavior of CO with O2 on free silver cluster anions

Abstract: Reactions of free silver anions Agn- (n = 1 - 13) with O2, CO, and their mixtures are investigated in a temperature controlled radio frequency ion trap setup. Cluster anions Agn- (n = 1 - 11) readily react with molecular oxygen to yield AgnOm- (m = 2, 4, or 6) oxide products. In contrast, no reaction of the silver cluster anions with carbon monoxide is detected. However, if silver cluster anions are exposed to the mixture of O2 and CO, new reaction products and a pronounced, discontinuous size dependence in th… Show more

“…It has been recognized that the cluster alone cannot break the O-O bond, but because of cooperative effects the oxidation reaction might proceed (7,16 (17). In both cases structural and energetic properties of these gold and silver oxides are very similar.…”

“…Importantly, in this case, support effects do not contribute to the picture, giving an opportunity to focus on the properties of the isolated nanoparticles. Several research groups have studied metal clusters in the gas phase and have pinpointed the extremely strong dependence of reactivity of ultrasmall clusters on their size (Figure 9.2a) [35][36][37][38][39][40]. This is an excellent example of pure electronic size effects with a strong correlation between the trends in reactivity of clusters and their electronic properties (Figure 9.2b) unaffected by the presence of a support or organic ligands and capping agents.…”
