Strong thickness dependence in thin film photocatalytic heterojunctions: the ZnO–Bi2O3 case study

Alberto Bernal-Díaz,
Agileo Hernández-Gordillo,
Juan Carlos Alonso
et al.

Abstract: In thin film heterojunctions, the photocatalytic activity is strongly influenced by the deposition order and the thickness of each layer as different reactive species can be formed. Under certain conditions a synergistic effect can be achieved even under visible light.

“…Where α, h ν, E g and A represent the absorption coefficient, photon energy, band gap, and constant, respectively. For ZnO and CuI, n = 2 was chosen due to their direct transition semiconductor properties. , The band gap value was estimated from the Tauc plot of (α h ν) n versus photon energy ( h ν), as illustrated in Figure S3b. According to the tangent intercept, the band gap values of ZnO/Cu foam, CuI/Cu foam, CIZ-1, CIZ-2 and CIZ-3 were estimated to be 2.80, 2.68, 2.96, 2.84, and 2.90 eV.…”
