Strong quantum fluctuations from competition between magnetic phases in a pyrochlore iridate

Abstract: We report neutron diffraction measurements of the magnetic structures in two pyrochlore iridates, Yb2Ir2O7 and Lu2Ir2O7. Both samples exhibit the all-in-all-out magnetic structure on the Ir 4+ sites below TN 150 K, with a low temperature moment of around 0.45 µB/Ir. Below 2 K, the Yb moments in Yb2Ir2O7 begin to order ferromagnetically. However, even at 40 mK the ordered moment is only 0.57(3) µB/Yb, significantly smaller than the saturated moment of 2 µB/Yb deduced from magnetization measurements and from a r… Show more

“…29 Beside the majority A 2 Ir 2 O 7 phase, the contributions of unreacted A 2 O 3 and Ir also were traced out in diffraction data (see Figure 1). We note that previously prepared pyrochlore iridate samples always contained a small amount of secondary phases, 6,11,21,26,28,30 stemming from a high volatility of IrO 2 . Compared to the previous results, the content of secondary phases in our samples (less than 3% inspecting diffraction patterns) is well below the average.…”

“…The pyrochlore-structure 5d oxides Cd 2 Os 2 O 7 and A 2 Ir 2 O 7 also have metal-to-insulator transitions which coincide with magnetic order, but these cannot be Slater transitions because the magnetic order has propagation vector k = 0 which does not change the periodicity of the crystal potential [10,[49][50][51][52]. The magnetic order in Pb 2 CaOsO 6 , on the other hand, has propagation vector k = ( 1 2 , 1 2 , 0).…”
