Strong infrared spectral broadening in low-loss As-S chalcogenide suspended core microstructured optical fibers

Abstract: Abstract:We report the fabrication and characterization of the first guiding chalcogenide As 2 S 3 microstructured optical fibers (MOFs) with a suspended core. At 1.55 µm, the measured losses are approximately 0.7 dB/m or 0.35 dB/m according to the MOF core size. The fibers have been designed to present a zero dispersion wavelength (ZDW) around 2 µm. By pumping the fibers at 1.55 µm, strong spectral broadenings are obtained in both 1.8 and 45-m-long fibers by using a picosecond fiber laser. C. Miller, "Role of… Show more

“…Actually, losses are located between 0.35 dB/m and 0.7 dB/m depending on the glass quality and microstructure geometry. To our knowledge, these are the lowest attenuations reported to date on chalcogenide based MOFs [27,29]. It is worthy to remind that to ensure accurate core propagation losses measurements in MOF (or even simply double index fiber), the clad must be depleted.…”

“…In published papers on preparing chalcogenide MOFs with a solid-core, the following techniques of preform manufacturing have been used: "stack and draw" (assembly of capillaries inside the substrate tube) (Brilland et al, 2006;Desevedavy et al, 2008), molding (with use of silica glass pattern of the specified photonic crystal design) (Coulombier et al, 2010;Conseil et al, 2011), and drilling (El-Amraoui et al, 2010). Usually, the thin capillaries are drawn from the chalcogenide glass tube prepared by centrifugal casting.…”
