Strong Coupling between Localized Plasmons and Organic Excitons in Metal Nanovoids

Abstract: Hybrid emitting exciton-plasmonic composites are constructed by coating arrays of spherical nanovoids embedded in a gold film with organic semiconducting molecular J-aggregate films. In such plasmonic crystals, localized plasmons confined inside the voids can be excited. We report the first observation of polaritonic spectral narrowing and strong coupling between localized plasmons and J-aggregate excitons with Rabi splittings of 230 meV at room temperature.

“…When the incidence angle is in the range of 25°-31°, as marked by the black dashed lines in Fig. 3a, a Rabi splitting-type anticrossing 35,36 between D1 and D3 is observed on both the simulated and measured reflectance spectra (see Supplementary Fig. S1 for the mode exchange details).…”

“…At this point, the interaction between LSPs and excitons has not been explained by the dielectric function. Moreover, according to whether there is perturbation between wave functions, the coupling between LSPs and excitons can be divided into strong coupling and weak coupling [58]. When the molecule and the SP are coupled into a hybrid state, there is a perturbation between wave functions.…”

“…In fact, J-aggregate dyes have been well-known in the photonics community for strong coupling and dye-sensitizer studies [5,[14][15][16]. Exciton transport in Jaggregates was also considered for excitonic circuits that can enable control of optical energy transport at the molecular level [17].…”
