Strong Antibacterial Polydopamine Coatings Prepared by a Shaking-assisted Method

Abstract: Strong antibacterial polydopamine (PDA) coatings prepared by a facile shaking-assisted method is reported for the first time. It was found that a minor modification made to the conventional synthesis procedure of PDA coatings, viz. replacing the static solution condition with a shaking solution condition by using a mechanical shaker, can produce the roughened polydopamine (rPDA) coatings at different substrates, e.g., glass, stainless steel, plastic, and gauze. The resulting rPDA coatings were characterized wi… Show more

“…These ndings are in consistence with previous studies where PDA is known to make surfaces more hydrophilic. 38,59,60 Elasticity and viscosity are signicant properties related to hydrogel materials. Any change in the structure will reect a change in these properties.…”

“…Alternatively, surface coating with polydopamine (PDA) has been proved as an effective method for supporting cell adhesion and long‐term proliferation on PDMS . Dopamine (DA) is generally considered as a type of cell‐compatible molecules, which can be strongly adsorbed onto a majority of substrate materials through covalent conjugation or physical interactions . However, only a few reports demonstrated that PDA can be codeposited with other functional molecules onto PDMS surfaces to achieve stabilized adhesion and biological activity.…”

“…The mussel adhesive-inspired polydopamine (PD) appears to be an ideal biomaterial coating since it fulfils all these criteria. It exhibits low cytotoxicity [2], antibacterial properties [3,4], promotes cell growth [5][6][7][8], resists corrosion [9], can aid antibiotic release [10,11], is simple to produce with control over film thickness [12] and can be attached to a variety of surfaces including silanes [13], metals [9,14], polymers [7,[15][16][17] dentine [18] and even hair [19].…”
