Stromal expression of neutrophil gelatinase‐associated lipocalin correlates with poor differentiation and adverse prognosis in oral squamous cell carcinoma

Abstract: This study is the first to show the clinical significance of stromal NGAL expression, which may be an indicator of poor prognosis and more aggressive histological grade in OSCC. Our data suggest that NGAL expression in tumour cells and expression in stroma are associated in different ways with OSCC differentiation.

“…Among the proteins that were found up‐regulated in the saliva from OSCC patients, Hiromoto et al., 2011 also showed that the LCN2 expression was strongly up‐regulated in well‐differentiated OSCC tissues and correlated with poor differentiation and adverse prognosis in oral squamous cell carcinoma . Noorlag et al.…”

“…Similar results have been reported by another study in which it was shown by immuno-histochemical examinations that NGAL expression was strongly up-regulated in well-differentiated oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC) tissues and moderately to weakly up-regulated in moderately to poorly differentiated OSCC tissues as compared to normal mucosa and leukoplakia showing very weak expressions. Western blot analysis showed positive correlation of NGAL expression levels with cell morphology patterns and loss of E-cadherin[18]. So, NGAL levels may be raised as an effect or cause of tumor.…”

“…Accordingly, higher neutrophil density was associated with lymph node metastasis and recurrence, and poor tumor differentiation . On the other hand, these studies show lack of association between TAN and patient age, tumor location, tumor size, N stage, tumor histological grade, and clinical stage . Thus, there is still no consensus on the clinical and prognostic relevance of TAN for OSCC patients.…”

“…For OSCC, studies reported association between high neutrophil to lymphocyte ratio (NLR) and worse prognosis, poor tumor differentiation, and advanced clinical stages . Accordingly, higher neutrophil density was associated with lymph node metastasis and recurrence, and poor tumor differentiation . On the other hand, these studies show lack of association between TAN and patient age, tumor location, tumor size, N stage, tumor histological grade, and clinical stage .…”
