Stroke Prevention Rehabilitation Intervention Trial of Exercise (SPRITE) - a randomised feasibility study

Abstract: BackgroundThe value of cardiac rehabilitation (CR) after a transient ischaemic attack (TIA) or minor stroke is untested despite these conditions sharing similar pathology and risk factors to coronary heart disease. We aimed to evaluate the feasibility of conducting a trial of an adapted home-based CR programme, ‘The Healthy Brain Rehabilitation Manual’, for patients following a TIA/minor stroke, participants’ views on the intervention and, to identify the behaviour change techniques (BCTs) used.MethodsClinicia… Show more

“…In particular, further studies should be carried out to determine the value of initiating comprehensive secondary prevention, including non-pharmacological management, in the acute period following a TIA/minor stroke. One such emerging study is SPRITE,43 which aims to examine the effectiveness of a home-based rehabilitation programme, promoting the role of primary care in managing cardiovascular risk factors in the acute period following a TIA/minor stroke, particularly via non-pharmacological methods, for example, smoking cessation advice and physical activity promotion.…”

“…Heron and colleagues 2017, reported positive findings from their feasibility study conducted in Ireland which involved a novel adapted home-based cardiac rehabilitation program, administered at 4-weeks post first TIA or minor stroke. The study included three groups, a standard care group, a group that received a home-based cardiac rehabilitation program, and a group that received a home-based cardiac rehabilitation program and pedometer or Fitbit (Heron et al, 2017).…”

“…The cardiac rehabilitation program included a manual and introductory session to explain how to use the manual, provision of medical and social information about TIAs/'minor' strokes and goalsetting education (Heron et al, 2017). Sessions also focussed on topics relevant to cardiovascular risk, community resources, diet and secondary prevention medication (Heron et al, 2017). Standard care was administered as per UK guidelines (Heron et al, 2017).…”
