Stroke Mimics

Abstract: Stroke mimics are an important consideration for emergency physicians and physician extenders working in emergency departments. The emergency medicine physician must determine whether the acute neurologic deficits represent a transient event or a potential stroke. This article describes the common stroke mimic presentations by cause, including toxic-metabolic pathologies, seizure disorders, degenerative neurologic conditions, and peripheral neuropathies.

“…The proportion of SMs among suspected strokes differs considerably from medical research [2] cited as 19% [3], 14% [4] and 13% [5]. According to the published literature, forecasters of SMs are younger individuals, more frequently females, with fewer risk factors for stroke [6] than real stroke cases.…”

The causes of stroke mimics are diverse and are mainly metabolic, such as hypoglycemia, hepatic encephalopathy, and neurological diseases, such as encephalitis and brain tumor 7.…”
