Stroke, cerebrovascular diseases and vascular cognitive impairment in Africa

Abstract: With increased numbers of older people a higher burden of neurological disorders worldwide is predicted. Stroke and other cerebrovascular diseases do not necessarily present with different phenotypes in Africa but their incidence is rising in tandem with the demographic change in the population. Age remains the strongest irreversible risk factor for stroke and cognitive impairment. Modifiable factors relating to vascular disease risk, diet, lifestyle, physical activity and psychosocial status play a key role i… Show more

“…We expected to see stronger positive relationships between cardiovascular risk factors and incident impairment [43]. Survival rates from stroke or heart attack may be relatively low in our study population [44], and survivors may disproportionately have characteristics that protect against cardiovascular mortality and subsequent cognitive impairment or dementia, with the effect of biasing our estimates toward the null [35, 36].…”

“…There is however a dearth of studies on effective post-stroke cognitive rehabilitation strategies from LMICs ( 1 ). Given the burden of post-stroke cognitive impairment especially in terms of its prevalence ( 364 ), and its potentially negative impact on other important constructs such as activities of daily living ( 365 ), participation ( 366 ), and quality of life ( 367 ), there is an urgent need to identify effective interventions that can be easily incorporated into real-life practice in LMICs.…”

“…It is also responsible for more than half of first time acute stroke in Africa [2]. It is also a potentially modifiable risk factor for dementia, a disease of concern in Africa where ageing, stroke and other cardiovascular diseases are rising [3, 4]. A number of systematic analyses of hypertension in adults and in adolescents in Africa have recently been conducted [59].…”
