String expansion as large N expansion of gauge theories

Abstract: We consider string perturbative expansion in the presence of D-branes imbedded in orbifolded space-time. In the regime where the string coupling is weak and α ′ → 0, the string perturbative expansion coincides with 't Hooft's large N expansion. We specifically concentrate on theories with d = 4 and N = 0, 1, 2, 4, and use world-sheet orbifold techniques to prove vanishing theorems for the field theory β-functions to all orders in perturbation theory in the large N limit. This is in accord with recent predictio… Show more

“…Thus, the knowledge of the effective superpotential in one of the theories automatically fixes the effective superpotential in the other. It is interesting to note that for SU (3), where the antisymmetric representation is equivalent to antifundamental, we can relate the actions of the theory with the adjoint and fundamental matter. This is quite remarkable!…”

“…As an example, let us consider a particular case with a tree-level quartic superpotential. 3 The effective superpotential for the theory with the adjoint matter was calculated in Ref. [31]; for the theory with the fundamental matter it was calculated in Ref.…”
