Striking essential oil: tapping into a largely unexplored source for drug discovery

Abstract: Essential oils (EOs) have been used therapeutically for centuries. In recent decades, randomized controlled (clinical) trials have supported efficacy in specific therapeutic indications for a few of them. Some EOs, their components or derivatives thereof have been approved as drugs. Nevertheless, they are still considered products that are mainly used in complementary and alternative medicine. eo components occupy a special niche in chemical space, that offers unique opportunities based on their unusual physic… Show more

“…Currently, EO has increased its reputation as a harmless, natural, and active antibacterial. Many sectors such as pharmaceutical and cosmetic products have proposed to use it externally as the primary antimicrobial or as a natural preservative [ 47 , 48 , 49 , 50 , 51 , 52 , 53 , 54 , 55 ]. The tests of Escherichia coli cells or other microbes using an electron microscopy after having contact with EOs discovered a damage of cellular electron-dense material and coagulation of cytoplasmic parts.…”

“…Various in vitro and in vivo studies have documented the biological benefits of EOs and their active compounds, such as possessing antimicrobial, antioxidant, anti-tumour and anti-inflammatory properties [2,3]. In addition to the rapid emergence of the antibiotic resistance crisis worldwide, there is a clear urgency for the development of new antimicrobial compounds; EOs have also been favourably viewed in this regard due to their promising antimicrobial properties and therapeutic potential [4,5]. The mechanisms of action of the EOs and/or their components against bacteria have also been widely explored.…”

“…These uncertainties in the standard of quality all together limits their use clinically. Even though essential oils still have some drawbacks in clinical use, the chemical properties of most essential oils are in line with Lipinski’s rule of five on important physicochemical parameters of druggability [ 13 , 14 ]. Based on these oils, a more reproducible, chemically well-defined synergistic blend called CIN-102 has been developed by Septeos.…”
