Strike slip motion and the triggering of subduction initiation

Abstract: Plate tectonic reconstructions of three of the best-defined Cenozoic subduction initiation (SI) events in the western Pacific, Izu-Bonin-Mariana, Vanuatu, and Puysegur subduction zones, show substantial components of strike-slip motion before and during the subduction initiation. Using computational models, we show that strike-slip motion has a large influence on the effective strength of incipient margins and the ease of subduction initiation. The parameter space associated with visco-elasto-plastic rheologie… Show more

“…Plate tectonics is the most important expression of the active Earth, with the general theory having been established for more than 50 years (McKenzie & Parker, 1967; Morgan, 1968; Pichon, 1968). Subduction initiation (SI), as a milestone between the divergent and convergent regimes of Wilson cycle, has been widely studied and discussed recently (e.g., Arculus et al., 2019; Gurnis et al., 2019; Ishizuka et al., 2011; Lallemand & Arcay, 2021; Li, 2024; Li et al., 2023; Nikolaeva et al., 2010; Niu, 2016; Shuck et al., 2021, 2022; Stern, 2004; Stern & Gerya, 2018; Toth & Gurnis, 1998; Ulvrova et al., 2019; Vaes et al., 2019; van Hinsbergen et al., 2015; Zhong & Li, 2019, 2021). However, it remains a key unresolved problem of plate tectonics.…”
