Striatal gray matter volumes, externalizing traits, and N-back task performance: An exploratory study of sex differences using the human connectome project data

Abstract: The striatum is implicated in externalizing traits and cognitive dysfunction. The ventral and dorsal striatal subregions may play differentiable roles in externalizing behaviors and executive functions. We employed voxel-based morphometry to estimate the striatal gray matter volumes (GMVs) of 968 young adults (510 women) of the Human Connectome Project. We examined sex differences in striatal GMVs, tested how striatal GMVs related to an externalizing trait (Extn), and 2-back memory efficiency (Eff2), and exami… Show more

“…We evaluated the results at a corrected of p < 0.05/23 = 0.0022. For the correlations that were significant for either group, we also performed slope t tests to examine group differences in the correlations as in our prior work ( Chen et al, 2022c ; Chen and Li, 2022 ; Zar, 1999 ): where is the standard error of the difference between the regression coefficients β 1 and β 2 . Note that the slope tests did not represent “double dipping.” We used a corrected threshold in identifying the clusters from whole-brain regressions, and those clusters that met the threshold in, for example, smokers, might have just missed the threshold in never smokers, and vice versa.…”

“…We implemented the VBM analysis to quantify regional GMVs with the CAT12 toolbox ( http://dbm.neuro.uni-jena.de/vbm/ ). The details of VBM analysis have been described in our previous studies 65 , 66 . The VBM analysis identifies differences in the local composition of brain tissues, accounting for large-scale variation in gross anatomy and location.…”
