In organic semiconductors, the sudden appearance of deep traps (30 -100 meV) below 100 -200 K is frequently observed experimentally even in highly crystalline films and single crystals. We analyzed this phenomenon by molecular dynamics combined with semi-empirical quantum chemical calculation, and found that defect levels are concealed by thermal disorder at high temperatures but appear as hole traps at low temperatures. We propose that the thermal energetic disorder may lead to a considerably large thermoelectric effect in organic semiconductors.--

This paper reviews materials for thermoelectric waste heat recovery, and discusses selected industrial and distributed waste heat sources as well as recovery methods that are currently applied. Thermoelectric properties, especially electrical conductivity, thermopower, thermal conductivity and the thermoelectric figures of merit, are considered when evaluating thermoelectric materials for waste heat recovery. Alloys and oxides are briefly discussed as materials suitable for medium- and high-grade sources. Electroactive polymers are presented as a new group of materials for low-grade sources. Polyaniline is a particularly fitting polymer for these purposes. We also discuss types of modifiers and modification methods, and their influence on the thermoelectric performance of this class of polymers.

Copolymerization of aniline and o-toluidine is achieved by chemical oxidative polymerization with equal molar ratio of monomers in the presence of hydrochloric acid and ammonium persulphate as an oxidant. The copolymer found to be more soluble in polar solvents such as NMP, DMF and DMSO. FTIR spectroscopy confirms the copolymer chemical structure. UV spectroscopy shows π to π* transition and excitonic transition of the copolymer film. The copolymer is doped with camphorsulfonic acid (CSA) in m-cresol and then zinc oxide nanoparticles are dispersed into the copolymer and spin coated on to a glass plate. The scanning electron microscope image shows the morphology of the copolymer matrix. X-ray Diffraction shows the characteristic peaks of CSA and zinc oxide. EDAX analysis confirms the presence of CSA and zinc oxide. The dispersion of zinc oxide nanoparticles show quenching property of photoluminescence indicating that the copolymer can be used in the opto-electronics.
