Stressors and Turning Points in High School and Dropout

Abstract: High school dropout is commonly seen as the result of a long-term process of failure and disengagement. As useful as it is, this view has obscured the heterogeneity of pathways leading to dropout. Research suggests, for instance, that some students leave school not as a result of protracted difficulties but in response to situations that emerge late in their schooling careers, such as health problems or severe peer victimization. Conversely, others with a history of early difficulties persevere when their circ… Show more

“…Although we note that though the associations we uncover between middle childhood reading, math, and antisocial behavior with later attainment are strong, they are not determinative. Thus our work also supports Dupere et al’s (2015) call for more attention to the intersection of early vulnerabilities and later disruptive events more proximal to the educational outcomes being studied.…”

“…As noted by Dupéré and colleagues (2015), this model and much of the related empirical work does not theoretically integrate long-term factors that may contribute to the disengagement process with specific short-term precipitating events. Dupéré et al argue for a developmental life course approach, which recognizes the developmental underpinning of educational trajectories that begin earlier in life and seeks to better explain how these interact with later occurring proximal factors.…”

“…Le décrochage scolaire est vu comme l'aboutissement d'un long processus de désengagement, où plusieurs facteurs de risque distaux et proximaux s'enchaînent et s'accumulent (Alexander, Entwisle et Kabbani, 2001;Dupéré et al, 2014;Rumberger, 2011).…”

“…Throughout this paper I describe inequality in terms of finishing a 4-year degree, rather than in terms of dropping out, although the completion and attrition literatures do have significant overlap (Dupéré et al, 2015;Tinto, 1987). I conclude with a discussion of potential policy implications of these theories and important avenues for future research to pursue.…”
